In Graphic Production I class, I had to demonstrate type attributes by recreating an album cover. Naturally, I chose a local artist – Nam, whose debut album, Exhale, released just this past summer.
I hate assignments like this where they tell you to make something but you have to have to include certain details (in this case, type attributes like body copies, columns, effects, etcetera) because it limits you to what your design would look like. If you know one more effect on a text would make it not look good you have to add it to get max points on a project – it sucks! Shit just causes dilemmas and doesn’t give our eye practice for design.
Anyway, I played on the album title, Exhale, and since I’ve had many-a-stoge talks with Nam, I wanted to express exhaling smoke. Admittedly, smoking is a horrible habit, but there’s something poetic about smoke being exhaled. Maybe it’s the way it looks and travels or the feeling of solitude you get when you’re having a one-on-one break to yourself while smoking a cigarette, but it’s reminiscent of what his album title means. Everything isn’t conceptual – just what stands out and looks good.
