Women’s History Month is still going strong. Poster I did for a Women’s Health Fair on the SCCC campus – today!
Logo I created for Gabriela USA’s national campaign, iVOW.
Across the United States, in New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles, Filipino women launched a nationwidecampaign to fight violence against women. The campaign, spearheaded by GABRIELA USA, is called Voices of Women versus Violence Against Women or iVOW. Member organizations of GABRIELA USA have already begun to host educational workshops on violence against women and calling for individuals to take a vow to fight women’s oppression and all forms of violence committed against them. The iVOW campaign is a comprehensive campaign that addresses issues such as sex trafficking and prostitution, domestic violence, rape, incest, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, sexual discrimination and exploitation, limited access to reproductive health care, and violence as a result of political repression.
To learn more about the iVOW campaign, community members are encouraged to attend local events in New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles. The campaign will continue with events throughout March, withcommemorations of International Women’s Day (March 8th). Please contact gabrielawomen@gmail.com for further details.
Check it out in action, along with the pledge cards, at CUNY Hunter College:
Worked this MLK Week poster needed on campus. Initially thinking about what to do, I was gonna head for something sweet and solemn. But after looking at hella MLK posters, it was obvious that what the public knows about this man is two things: that he had a dream and that he was all about peace. His face and his name are apart of pop culture. No one focuses on his work with Malcom X, on his speeches closer to the Vietnam War, or that he even had other speeches other than “I Have a Dream”. And who is better suited to popularizing meaningful people into pop icons? My man Shepard Fairey, that fucker. So I decided to get my Fairey on and make the poster with that style, haha.
This post is a two-for. I get to show off my work (whose creative concepts were coupled by myself and my beau) and you get the opportunity to attend a free event for good cause. December 10th is International Human Rights Day and with the recent Maguindanao Massacre and the torture and abduction of Melissa Roxas earlier this year, awareness of these injustices and many others is needed now more than ever.
I found out about this art exhibition featuring Filipino and Filipino-Amerikan artists work centered around Filipino folklore – and a portion of the proceeds will be donated towards typhoon relief in the Philippines. If you are in the Bay Area or will be during November 13 – December 12, head out to 1:AM Gallery and check out the exhibit. There’s a lot of dope artists in the line up!
1:AM gallery presents “Tabi Tabi Po,“ a multidisciplinary group exhibition that explores the rich and colorful creatures of Filipino Folklore through Urban Contemporary art, featuring artists who are either Filipino or have Filipino ancestry. The Kapre, Manananggal, Dwende, Tikbalang, and Aswang are just a sampling of these haunting creatures that will be brought to life in this exhibit. This exhibit will explore the cultural significance of Filipino folklore- both myth and reality. It aims to explore the migration of native Filipino tradition, from its rural origins of the countrysides of the Philippines, to the urban cities of Metro Manila, and across the Pacific and Atlantic: the San Francisco Bay Area, the streets of Los Angeles, the Boroughs of New York, the beaches of Hawaii, and the mountains of Norway. Tabi Tabi Po will be a multi-media installation, incorporating sound, structures, murals, indigenous craftwork and, of course, original 2-d art.
A percentage of proceeds will be donated to relief efforts in the Philippines who have been affected by Typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma). Donations will be going directly to the communities that have been most impacted by the Typhoons. Proceeds will go to BAYAN Philippines and BALSA (Bayanihan para sa Sambayanan / “People’s Cooperation for the People”) Relief Operation.
